EventsFolk Art: Story Quilts

Folk Art: Story Quilts

3:00 PM – 3:45 PM
Ravenna Branch

Description

Design quilt blocks reminiscent of the Story Quilts made by African American artist Harriet Powers.

Although Harriet Powers used a mixture of machine and hand-sewing, we will be skipping the needle and thread for this program. Our quilt squares will be created with scissors, fabric and glue. Each square will represent a different story.

What is Folk Art?
The definition of folk art varies, but most descriptions offer a common set of criteria: It has either a utilitarian or decorative function, it is reflective of the culture from where it originated, and can be self-taught or taught informally. By making folk art we can learn international history, deepen our sense of self-identity, and create bridges with those from differing cultures.
